What Is KaiOS
What is KaiOS? If I were to answer that, KaiOS would easily pass as the dark horse of the mobile OS makers, powering more than 40 million feature phones around the world. Most of you might have not even heard about this new player in the market, even though it’s steadily making its way into the big player league. Google’s massive $22 million investment on KaiOS proves this fact which means this “Dumb phone” OS has grabbed the attention of the competitive market.
We can also say that the KaiOS is a revived OS since it’s a modification of the previously abandoned project “Firefox OS”. Being an open source platform, Mozilla has made available the source code of the project, allowing the emergence of KaiOS. Bridging the gap between the feature phones and the smartphones, the US-based company was able to grab a huge market in developing countries, which still have demand for feature phones within low budget range. Which apparently brought a huge success to KaiOS, that we didn’t see coming.
KaiOS already partnered with around 20 carriers, including Sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile and Reliance Jio with a diverse team spread across America, Europe and Asia. Driven by the primary goal of closing the digital divide, the KaiOS team thrives to add value to their product. They allow affordable but smart services to the public.
Features and Technologies behind KaiOS
KaiOS is based on HTML5 that requires only a limited memory, even though it includes many features that do not come with other non-smart phones. It supports 4G/LTE, Wi-Fi, GPS and NFC. One thing that makes it more appealing is that it’s one of the three mobile operating systems that supports third-party applications like Facebook and Twitter. KaiOS also has their own app store named “KaiStore”, which was launched recently and will be available in most countries by the end of 2018. It includes most of the popular mobile applications. As a result of the involvement with Google, it carries most of the Google services like Google Assistant, Google Maps and Google Search. Since KaiOS runs on basic feature phones without the touchscreen and extended keyboard, the voice input brought with Google Assistant is a huge plus point. Since it also supports JavaScript, the development of applications is relatively easier.
The affordability of the phones that run KaiOS greatly lies in its hardware requirements. Since it works well with all the chipsets of major manufacturers, it supports innovative back-end services, consuming only less memory and energy. Which results in longer battery life as well. By taking out the touchscreen, they have managed to reduce the cost drastically. This concept of KaiOS has managed to deliver internet facilities to most people who have never used the internet in their lives.
How it Came to be
We think it’s the era of smartphones. But when we have a look at the actual statistics, only 30% of the world population use smartphones currently. Which means that the majority of the people still use basic feature mobile phones or don’t use them at all. KaiOS has able to gap this division with their affordable price and by offering the ability to connect with the world through their clean and simple interface.
KaiOS made their first breakthrough appearance with the recently launched Nokia 8110 4G or widely known as “Banana Phone”. The rise of KaiOS from no name to the third most used mobile OS was not a surprise considering the market growth of feature phones. Which is higher than the smartphone market. With this new concept of “smarter” feature phones of KaiOS, there’s no doubt about the decision of Google to invest in this project. As proof of their innovative technology, KaiOS has announced the Best Mobile Technology Breakthrough at the MWC’s Asia Mobile Awards 2018.
As an end note, here’s a fun fact; Some of you might think KaiOS is named thus cause of it rhymes with iOS. Well, no. Kai actually originated from the Chinese word 开 (kāi), meaning “open”. If you’re interested in more details follow their own website here.

නව AR අත්දැකීම
ARKit 1.5 නවම හදුන්වාදීම මගින් මේස පුටු වැනි තිරස් මතුපිට වල ඇති වස්තුන්ට අමතරව, බිත්ති සහ දොරවල් වැනි සිරස් පෘෂ්ඨ මත ඇති සහ වක්‍රාකාර අක්‍රමවත් හැඩැති වස්තූන්වල පවා හැඩයන් වඩාත් නිවැරදිව හදුනා ගැනීම මෙන්ම ඒවායේ ප්‍රමාණ නිර්ණය කිරීම් කල හැකිය. මෙමගින් කෞතුකාගාර වැනි ස්ථානවල සංඥා, පෝස්ටර් සහ කලා කෘති ආදිය ස්ථානගත කිරීමට අවශ්‍ය ප්‍රමාණ ගණනය, අදාළ තීරණයන් ගැනීම පහසු වෙනවා. ඊට අමතරව පෙරට වඩා 50% කට වැඩි කැමරා විභේදනයක් (resolution) ද මෙහි අන්තර්ගත වෙනවා.
Animoji
Animoji කියල කියන්නේ iPhone X භාවිතා කරන්නන් අතර ඉතා ජනප්‍රිය හඬ සහ මුහුණේ අංගචලන අනුකරණය කළහැකි නවතම හදුන්වාදීපු emoji විශේෂයක්. මේ නවතම update එක හරහා අලුතින් සිංහයයෙකු, වලසෙකු, මකරෙකු හෝ හිස්කබලක් ලෙසින් Animoji පෙළක් හදුන්වලා දෙනවා. iPhone X භාවිතා කරන්නන්ට මුළු Animoji ගණන දැන් 16ක් ලෙසින් වැඩි වෙන නිසා ඔවුන්ට ඒ අතරින් තමන්ට කැමති ආකාරයකට Animoji එදිනෙදා කෙටි පණිවිඩ වලට යොදාගන්න තෝරාගන්න පුළුවන්.

අද බොහෝ දෙනාට Gmail ගිණුමක් සතුයි. තම එදිනෙදා වැඩ කටයුතු මෙන්ම විවිධාකාර web ගිණුම් සඳහා Gmail ගිණුම් භාවිතා කරන නිසාම එහි ඇති රහස්‍ය භාවය අතිශයෙන් වැදගත් කරුණක්. විශේෂයෙන්ම මේ දිනවල අහන්නට දකින්නට ලැබෙන දේවල් සලකා බැලීමේදී cyber අවකාශයේදී තම පෞද්ගලිකත්වයට හානියක් වේදෝයි කුඩා හෝ චකිතයක් දැනීම පුදුමයට කරුණක් නොවේ. දේශපාලකයන්, ව්‍යාපාරිකයන් හා සමාජයට බලපෑම් කල හැකි පුද්ගලයන්ගේ web ගිණුම් ඉලක්ක කොට රහස්‍ය දත්ත සොරා ගනිමින් ව්‍යාප්ත වන “Targeted Attacks “ නම් online ප්‍රහාර වලට එරෙහිව නවතම විසඳුමක් Google විසින් හඳුන්වා දී තිබෙනවා. එය නමින් Advanced Protection Programme නැතහොත් APP වේ.

Google විසින් කරන ලද සමීක්ෂණයකට අනුව පෙන්වා දී ඇත්තේ වර්ථමානයේ භාවිතා වන ආරක්‍ෂිත ක්‍රම අභිබවා online ප්‍රහාර එල්ල කල හැකි බවයි. APP මගින් පැතිකඩ තුනක් ඔස්සේ ආරක්ෂාව තර කරලා තියනවා.
එයින් පළමු පැතිකඩ තමයි phishing ප්‍රහාර වලින් ආරක්ෂා කිරීම. සමහර වෙලාවට තෙවන පාර්ශ්වික Apps වලට log වීමේදී හෝ අලුතින් install කිරීමේදී ඔබගේ දත්ත (email වැනි) පරිහරණය කිරීම සඳහා අවසර ලබා දීමට සිදුවනවා. Advanced Protection Programme එක මගින් මෙසේ පිටට යවන දත්ත සීමා කරනවා.තෙවැන්න වන්නේ යම්කිසි කෙනෙකු වශයෙන් පෙනී සිට ඔහුගේ ගිණුම් වලට අයුතු ලෙස ඇතුළු වීම වැලැක්වීමයි.
මෙහිදී ආරක්‍ෂිත ක්‍රමවේදය ලෙස අපි දැනට භාවිතා කරන 2-step verification වගේ ක්‍රම වලින් ඔබ්බට ගිය ක්‍රමයක් වශයෙන් physical security key එකක් භාවිතා කරනවා. මෙය ඇත්තටම dongle එකක්. එය Bluetooth (Mobile ,Tablet , PC සඳහා) හෝ USB(පුද්ගලික පරිගණකය සඳහා පමණි) ආකාරයෙන් ඔබගේ පරිගණකයට සම්බන්ධ විය හැකිය. මෙය ඔබ පාවිච්චි කරන device එක සමග සම්බන්ධ කර බොත්තමක් එබූ සැනින් Google විසින් ඔබගේ අනන්‍යතාවය හඳුනා ගැනේ.
Phishing Attacks වළක්වන්නේ කොහොමද?
Phishing attacks වලදී බොහෝ විට අපි දන්නා site එකක් ලෙස පෙනී සිටිමින් ඔබගේ දත්ත අයුතු ලෙස ලබා ගන්නා අවස්ථාවන් තිබෙනවා. අලුතින් හඳුන්වා දෙන security key එක ක්‍රියාත්මක වන්නේ කලින් හඳුනාගත් genuine sites වලට පමණක් නිසා මෙවැනි අවධානම් වලින් ගැලවෙන්නට පුළුවන්.
APP කරදරයක් වෙයිද?
ඉහත පෙන්වා දුන් පරිදි APP වලින් ලොකු ආරක්ෂාවක් සපයනවා. ඒත් මේ නිසා සිදුවන බාධාවීම් හා කරදර නැතුවාම නොවේ . පළමුව කිව යුතු වන්නේ ඔබ Google site එකකට ඇතුළු වීමේදී සෑම විටම ඉහත කී security key එක තිබිය යුතුයි. නැති නම් දවස් කීපයකට ඔබගේ ගිණුම හෝ site එකට ඇතුළු වීමට නොහැකි වේවි. ඒ වගේම කලින් සඳහන් කල පරිදි third -party apps වලට දත්ත ලබා දීම සීමිත නිසා එවැනි දත්ත අත්‍යවශ්‍ය apps භාවිතා කිරීමට නොහැකි වේවි. Google සේවාවන් සඳහා sign -in වීමේදී අනිවාර්යෙන් Google Chrome බ්‍රව්සරය පාවිච්චි කරන්නත් වෙනවා.

මුලදීම සඳහන් කල ආකාරයට Google විසින් මෙම APP සේවාව හඳුන්වා දීමට මූලික හේතුව වන්නේ Targeted Attacks. security key වලට යන වියදම අමතරව වෙනත් ලොකු වියදමක් මේ සඳහා වැය නොවුනත් ඔබ සාමාන්‍ය වැසියෙක් නම් ඉහත සඳහන් කල අවදානම් වලට ලක්වීමට ඇති ඉඩ කඩ සීමිත නිසා APP භාවිතා කිරීමට පෙර තවත් වරක් සිතා බලන්න.

අප කලින් ලිපියක් මගින් ransomware ගැන ඔබව දැනුවත් කලා ඔබට මතක ඇති. දින කිහිපයකට පෙර එවැනි වෛරසයක් පැතිරී විශාල අලාභ හානියක් සිදු කර ඇති අතර එය තවමත් පැතිරෙමින් පවතී.
එක්සත් ජනපද ජාතික ආරක්ෂක ඒජන්සිය (National Security Agency ) විසින් ඔවුන්ගේ බුද්ධි අංශ කටයුතු සදහා යොදා ගැනීමට නිර්මාණය කල බලවත් පරිගණක මෘදුකාංගයක් “Shadow Brokers” නමින් හදුන්වා ගන්නා කණ්ඩායමක් පසුගියදා සොරකම් කර ඇත. ඔවුන් එම පරිගණක මෘදුකාංගය භාවිතා කරමින් දැවැන්ත සයිබර් ප්‍රහාරයක් “WannaCry” හා “Wanna Decryptor” යන නාම වලින් ලොව පුරා දියත් කිරීමට සමත් වී තිබේ. මෙය Microsoft මෙහෙයුම් පද්ධති අන්තර්ගත පරිගණක ඉලක්ක කර ගනිමින් පැතිර පවතී. සයිබර් ආරක්ෂක සමාගමක් වන Avast සමාගම පවසන්නේ මෙම වෛරසය සම්බන්ධ පැමිණිලි 75,000 ක් පමණ ඔවුන්ට දැනටමත් දැක ගැනීමට ඇති බවයි.
මයික්‍රෝසොෆ්ට් සමාගම මගින් ඔවුන්ගේ නවතම Surface Laptop පරිගණකය පසුගිය සතියේදී එළිදැක්වීමට කටයුතු කරන ලදී. මෙම පරිගණකය ඔවුන්ගේ නවතම Windows 10 S මෙහෙයුම් පද්ධතිය සමග කටයුතු කිරීමට හැකි වන සේ නිර්මාණය කර ඇත.

The Nenasala Project which is implemented under the e-Sri Lanka Initiative, introduces several models of knowledge centres which are established in the rural and semi-urban population with aims of spreading ICT services. The project which has targeted for 1000 knowledge centres have now successfully deployed 800 centres. This e-Library Nenasala Program (eLNP) has increased the ICT literacy from below 10% in 2004 to almost 40% today.
In recognition of its impact, the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation has awarded the 2014 Access to Learning Award to the eLNP program. The award includes a sum of $1 million which is to be used to further strengthen the program.
Deborah Jacobs, director of the Global Libraries initiative for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation expressed her views after the announcement of the award “Without a doubt, the e-Library Nenasala Program is making a real and lasting impact on the lives of poor rural residents throughout Sri Lanka. People are getting locally relevant information and hands-on experience in the subject areas that matter most to them. Community members have a real investment in these centers, which promotes their longevity and sustainability for many years to come.”
Achieving such an award and obtaining the recognition for one of our ICT development program is something us Sri Lankans should be proud of. Kudos to the many people behind the project and best of luck in achieving the 1000 centre goal.

Millennium IT has awarded 3 GOLD, 1 SILVER and 3 BRONZE and is ranked at 34th the list across all industries. Virtusa is ranked at 39th with 2 GOLD, 2 SILVER and 5 BRONZE. DMS Software technologies has secured 61st place with 1 GOLD and 1 BRONZE medal. WSO2, MicroImage has ranked 73rd and 92nd respectively. Last year, Virtusa cooperation was the only Sri Lankan software business that got its name in the list appearing in the second fifty of companies.
Most Respected ranking is conceptualized by LMD, and conducted by Nielsen. Rankings are based on survey results on opinions expressed by respondents going in to details of why the companies were perceived as being the ‘most respected.’

About enTRUST & Title
enTrust & Title Group of companies develop and market state of the art E-Signature and Document Forensics technologies for private and public enterprises and for consumers through its Cloud service. Among many graphical representations of research statistics, Gartner Magic Quadrant is a graphical positioning based on the completeness of the vision and the ability to execute in the global market. It serves the bird eye view of technology providers for interested clients as a starting point of an analysis.
Vendor Selection
Vendors were selected based on the broader coverage of the application infrastructure suits and they were rated for the following aspects:
- Systematic SOA application projects
- Shared SOA interoperability and governance infrastructure
- Systematic and comprehensive application integration projects
While both IBM and Oracle secured Leader category in all 3 aspects, WSO2 was selected as Visionary in all of them. Visionaries understand where the market is going or have a vision for changing market rules, but do not yet execute to the same level. Compared to IBM and Oracle who are the market giants who have hundreds of thousands of employees and many years of experience behind them, WSO2 have shown their colors with just 160 employees and 8 years since inception.
According to Gartner’s report, they recommend their clients specially for building systematic SOA infrastructures and for developing SOA applications and composites. Following are some of the strengths highlighted in the report.
1. With successful deployments in high-volume environments, WSO2 has earned credibility as a provider of solutions for larger enterprises and mission-critical systems.
2. WSO2’s highly standardized and open architecture gives substantial freedom for organizations to combine and enhance solutions with existing integration technology. Its minimalist approach, as well as its use of OSGi for integration of WSO2 product modules, simplifies deployment and operational complexity.
3. Offerings are available both on-premises and in the cloud. The multitenant and elasticity enabled for its cloud deployment are also available in its on-premises products.
4. The vendor is growing and has acquired capital, which it has invested in geographic expansion and field and support organizations.
5. By embracing the concept of providing a platform that includes only broadly required functionality and that can be tailored to the needs of individual deployments, WSO2 dramatically simplifies the onboarding and operation of its solutions.
