How did VAR win the worldcup in Russia 2018?

VAR

It has been more than three months since the sensation, which comes every four years, the FIFA World Cup. This left us giving France the well deserving and history-making victory.

The only thing that was talked about other than Mbappe’s Performance in the world cup was the VAR, the Video Assistant referee, the first ever virtual referee assistance was introduced to the world of football in Moscow.

Before we talk about how the VAR gave chance for a penalty in the finals to score the first goal we shall break down the following.

What is a VAR and Why VAR?

VAR simply stands for Video Assistant Referees. Since the inception of football, the manual refereeing was always the way to go. The Referee would be in the field with the players and carefully spot for foul plays and chances in the game of football. But given the advancement in technology, the FIFA board tried VAR in Moscow and it was a super hit.

“We said we wanted this to be the best World Cup ever and it’s been the best World Cup ever. A crucial role in this achievement was played by the referees who excelled with performances of the highest standard,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

How does VAR work?

An exact dozen of referees have been trained and chosen to be Video Assistant Referees and they are far away from the pitch but watching every single move and breathe taken by the player each second. Every Game will have one main referee with the whistle and two assistants for him and far away behind the screens. There will be four referees glued to high definition camera screens. One video assistant referee (the main VAR) and three assistant video assistant referees (AVAR1, AVAR2 and AVAR3).

The main VAR has one video feed that they watch and underneath this a monitor comprising a split screen showing four feeds. Assistant VAR1 takes the main feed, AVAR2 is in charge of offside challenges and watches two screens for this – they have access to two dedicated cameras that aren’t used anywhere else. AVAR3 is watching the game as we would – they have their eyes on the television feed.

The VAR was centralized and was situated in Moscow. Each of the 12 stadiums’ video feeds is sent to this room (and each stadium has 33 cameras) through fibre optics. It’s also through this system that the on-pitch referee speaks to the VAR team.

When do we use VAR?

VAR is only used in real intense situations. The first is when there’s a goal and a potent offence has happened that lead to the goal. Then there’s a penalty decision: ones that have been awarded and ones that haven’t, but there’s contention that they should have been. The third is to do with red card incidences and the fourth is all about mistaken identity.

Finally,The implementation of VAR might have sound absurd at the beginning of the tournament but eventually, in this age and time with the advancement of technology, getting used to a system like that and producing correct results is a benefit for humanity and for the game of Soccer Thus Video Assistant Referees will play a huge role in the coming 21st century for Soccer.

France could have won the world cup. But clear VAR won the game of football in Moscow 2018.
