Google Maps is getting the coolest new features

Currently, Google Maps is the guiding source for most people’s destinations. It gives the sense of security and the knowledge to everyone where they are going. It plays a crucial role when there are disasters and the roads are getting blocked. With the constant updates of the status of the roads in the app, people can safely reach their destination.

With the increase in demand for the Google Maps app, Google is making massive improvements to it. Many cool features were introduced for Google Maps in the Google I/O 2018 Developer Conference.

A new tab named “For you” is added which can make suggestions based on personalized interests and experiences. It shows us what is trending on local day-to-day life and helps to keep people connected with their peers and keeps people updated. It also helps to provide recommendations when people are in doubt. For an example, if we want to try out a new restaurant and there are always a number of trending restaurants to try out. Google has come up with a score called “Your Match” which uses Machine Learning to analyze millions of restaurants and compare with the user’s personal preferences based on previous ratings of hotels, check-ins, information Google has about us and suggests the restaurant we would enjoy the most.

Another problem that the new features help to overcome is the collisions that might happen when picking places to go out with friends. A new functionality is added where you can easily select favorite places, shortlist them and share easily with friends via any communicating platform such as Whatsapp, Facebook and get the friends’ feedback and they also can add their preferences and make changes.

With the advent of the AI and computer vision technologies, Google is able to implement many amazing developments. Augmented Reality is used to help in finding directions in walking navigation. Here, the camera is used in Maps, with computer vision and Street View. GPS is only enough to locate the users’ current location but VPS (Visual Positioning System) is used in the new feature that estimates precise positioning and orientation. VPS analyses the visual features in the environment and identifies the landmarks, buildings and help the user to find directions easily. Here there is an AR overlay on the Map’s Street View and will show the directions the user has to navigate. This AR overlay will help to identify the surrounding buildings. A helpful guide, an AR fox is added which is a pretty cool feature where users can follow and safely reach their destination.

The new features are yet to be implemented in the Google Maps app and it would be introduced to both Android and iOS operating systems.

Gajaman by Camillus Perera can be considered as one of the most brilliant exotic creations of Sri Lanka, known by many in the seventies decade, which is a famous and an influential cartoon. This cartoon character had an immense impact on the society through his expressive nature as a newspaper cartoon and is now brought closer to the hearts of his fans using the unique ‘motion capture’ technology. The movie will be a magnificent creation to the ones who are very excited to witness its 3D encounter, which will be remarked as the first ever three dimensional (3D) animation movie in Sri Lanka, using the motion capture technology. It is planned to be released under the title, ‘Gajaman’.

This movie ‘Gajaman’ includes Perera’s most vibrant cartoon characters of that time, to make the experience much more significant to theatres around the country.

The animated movie is directed by Chanaka Perera, who is a professional 3D animator involved in the information technology and advertising industries. He studied at St. Peter’s College and later obtained his degree in multimedia from Swinburne University, Australia.

The movie trailer was recently released at a press conference held at the National Cinematic Corporation theatre, marking a significant milestone in the history of the country as well as the industry.

Background of the production of Gajaman

The underlying concept of ‘motion capture’ is used to direct the movements of the animated characters by capturing movements of real actors, through various modes of sensory equipment and software, giving them the most unique and realistic movements on screen. The cast for motion capture stars Dasun Pathirana, Chamara Priyadarshana, Kasuni, Pradeep, Tiran, and Sharada. The voice-over for Gajaman’s two lead roles are by the most influential local comedians of this era ‘Chooty Malli’ and ‘Podi Malli’ played by Suneth Chitrananda and Gaminda Priyaviraj, who also wrote the exciting script and storyline of the movie. Rashi Prabodha, Yureni Noshika, and Sunil Perera also involved in voicing characters of the movie.

The movie is produced by ‘Studio 101’ and is estimated to have a cost of over 75 million rupees since its production.

Sneak Peek on the story

‘Gajaman’ is a popular individual in his rural village who is the right-hand man of the top village politician ‘Magodis Thuma’ and carries out all the important work of Magodis Thuma to the letter – coordinating election campaigns, being his boss’ eyes and ears around the village and even extorting bribes.

The plot changes when Gajaman falls in love with Magodis Thuma’s beautiful daughter ‘Padmi’, who has been pursuing higher studies in the USA and decides to return to the village after several years, together with her best friend ‘Sweety’. This begins when Magodis Thuma entrusts Gajaman with the important task of picking them up from the airport. His situation is not helped by the fact that her Sinhala is understandably not the best while he has no clue about English. The movie flows with the attempts made by Gajaman to impress her. The news of Gajaman’s infatuation for his daughter reaches Magodis Thuma and he is infuriated.

The fans will get to experience an unexpected turn of events, which presents Gajaman with the opportunity to turn his luck around and get his life back on track.

We hope this will be a tremendous tribute to the great Sri Lankan cartoonist, Camillus Perera.

Most of you might have clicked on this link to find out the change I’m talking about. Maybe out of curiosity or maybe because you yourself knows that some things need to change. My focus through this article is on renewable energy, mainly solar power.

The change we need

Well, the change I’m going to unfold is about altering our lifestyles. The way we live, the way we think. Let me get to the point.

We, Sri Lankans, are still not used to sustainable lifestyles. We still use a large amount of polythene. We still don’t dispose waste in environment-friendly ways. Last year, after the tragic incident in Meethotamulla (the “Preventable” tragedy), the talk of the town was the following news.

“Central Environment Authority (CEA) has banned the use of polythene lunch sheets, rigifoam boxes, and shopping bags, with effect from 1st of September 2017. In a bid to make Sri Lanka polythene-free and find a sustainable solution to solid waste management….”

Yes, we did stop using polythene. BUT, only for a while. None of us got rid of polythene completely. In my opinion, the people would only be alert once again when another disaster takes place. It’s certainly is a tragedy.

Being sustainable is not going to be a choice in the future, it will be a necessity. But do we know how to be environment-friendly? Do we know enough about sustainable solutions?

Hence, I thought of bringing to light some important news considering one aspect of sustainable solutions, Solar Power.

Now more than ever, with the advancement of technology, life has been given the possibility to flourish or to lead towards self-destruct. It is up to us to make the difference.

CEO of SpaceX, Elon Musk and leading many other tech industry figures and researchers have signed an open letter to the United Nations insisting to regulate the use of AI in building autonomous weapons.

The Open Letter by Future of Life Institute backed by 116 signees including Elon Musk and Alphabet’s Mustafa Suleyman raises awareness how Artificial Intelligence and Robotics may be repurposed to develop autonomous weapons causing destruction to life.

Autonomous weaponry refers to using Artificial Intelligence to target locations to attack, or avoiding from such an attack.Used in applications such as AI driven, drone weaponry systems that independently analyze the surroundings and attack when seeing a specified target. If such technology is fallen into the hands of wrong people, it will cause a massive destruction.

As stated in the letter:

“Lethal autonomous weapons threaten to become the third revolution in warfare. Once developed, they will permit armed conflict to be fought at a scale greater than ever, and at timescales faster than humans can comprehend. These can be weapons of terror, weapons that despots and terrorists use against innocent populations, and weapons hacked to behave in undesirable ways.”

In previous instances, professionals have warned that deployment of autonomous weapons will be achievable within years, rather than in decades. Even though with the help of AI, could reduce casualties among human soldiers – at least in the most powerful and advanced nations but the risk to civilians is still high.

The industry experts and researchers had called for lethal autonomous weapons to be included in the list of banned weapons under the UN’s convention on certain conventional weapons (CCW) brought into force in 1983. It consists of chemical and intentionally blinding laser weapons.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has warned on many occasions about taking proactive measures for regulation of AI :

“ by the time we are reactive in AI regulation, it’s too late ”.

Once he also stated that AI is one of the existential threats to the human race.

Looking at the continuous development achieved by AI, AlphaGo winning against world’s best human Go player, AlphaGo Zero defeating a world champion program, the Sea Hunter US’s autonomous warship built by Vigor Industrial, it is high time for humans to decide on the future of AI.

Firefox Quantum, “New, Fast, Fierce”

Today, there are lots of browsers out there such as Google Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Safari, and Edge. But 15 years ago, there were only a few browsers to open up the web. Internet Explorer used to lead the web browser race, mainly because it was the default browser on every Windows system during that time. However, after the introduction of Chrome by Google in 2008, the Chrome began to gain popularity among the users because it’s better performance and features along with its simple UI. The popular browsers like Internet Explorer and Firefox couldn’t keep up with Google Chrome’s popularity and as of mid-2017, Google Chrome leads the web browser race. However, recently users had concerns about memory management issues in Chrome which made users look for a better one. Well, as the next step of this browser race, Firefox has recently announced a new web browser: Firefox Quantum, that they claim to be faster and better than Chrome. Let’s dive and see whether this new browser is as good as they say.

Why Quantum?

Speed and Memory Usage

First of all, let’s consider about speed. Mozilla claims that Firefox Quantum is twice as fast as Firefox browser which was released six months ago. To be exact, it’s 66 runs per minute compared to the previous Firefox release which had only 32 runs per minute. Firefox quantum also said to have better memory usage than its competitors: Chrome and Edge in Windows 10 and Ubuntu 16.04. Chrome uses 2X and 1.4X the memory Firefox uses in Linux and Windows 10 consequently.

What’s inside?

Firefox team has achieved this through their high-performance browser engine project called Servo. It was developed with Rush programming language that is both safe and fast which helps better utilization of multi-core processors. This also allowed them to come up with Quantum CSS (aka Stylo) CSS engine which is one the fastest rendering engines around. All of these contribute to the higher speed you will enjoy on Firefox Quantum. I tried the browser, and I must say that I found it pretty fast; Firefox will load whatever you needed in a wink. If someone is looking for a browser in terms of the speed, I think Firefox Quantum is a super match.

UI/UX

When it comes to the UI of the browser, they call it as Photon UI which includes some great features, than the previous ones. such as Mozilla Sync which allows you to send your tabs from your computer to mobile device or any device if you have installed Firefox on that devices too. Copying URL by just clicking on a single button appears in address bar. And taking screenshots right from the browser is something I liked the most.

What else?

There’s a feature called ‘Pocket’ where the idea is bookmarking a page, but it is slightly different since it has a separate space to keep them. Copying and emailing URLs is not hard anymore with Firefox Quantum because the facility to copy the current URL and email the link is provided right on the address bar.

So I guess Firefox team has developed a great browser with great User Experience. As a matter of fact, the secret behind the UI is their thorough research on how people browse the web. This research was done by using over 1000 respondents and results were gathered after conducting three phases which included a couple of interviews and on-site visits. After the observations, research team has come up with some workflows so based on those workflows they have added the new features which I mentioned early to Firefox Quantum.

In behind the success of Firefox Quantum, there are around 700 authors and 80 contributors scattered all around the world. And they say that there are 265,252,859,191,742,656,903,069,040,640,000 ways to customize the new Firefox toolbar.

AI creates fictional scenes out of real-life photos

With the advent of AI technology, self-driving cars, facial recognition and speech recognition are some of the adaptations that people make use of, in their day to day life. Presently AI is on its way to build photorealistic worlds on its own.

In the research carried out by Researcher Qifeng Chen of Stanford and Intel, 5000 photos from German streets were fed into the AI system. This was a Tensorflow implementation of cascaded refinement networks. With a small amount of human help AI system was able to build slightly blurry recreated scenes. The video above is a result of the research carried out.

In order to create an image using the AI system, humans have to enter details of what object goes where. For example, place a car there, place a tree here, put a building along to the right. It is sketched in numbers and the system manages to create an utterly unique scene based upon the input. In other words, when a semantic label map is input into the system, AI produces photographic images that conforms to the input layout.

Based on the paper “Photographic Image Synthesis with Cascaded Refinement Networks” presented at International Conference on Computer Vision, the system thus behaves as a rendering engine that takes a 2D semantic description and produces a corresponding image.

AI Model is a convolutional network, trained based on supervised learning on pairs of photographs and corresponding semantic layouts. The images that were synthesized, seamlessly scaled up to a resolution of 2 megapixels (1024×2048).

Even though AI is not able to create paintings to approach photorealism as highly trained craftsmen, these experiments have proved that artificial systems have the ability to synthesize an image that looks like a photograph based on a given novel semantic layout.

Google කියන්නේ අපි හැමෝටම අලුත් දෙයක් නෙවේ වගේම අපි බොහෝ දෙනාගේ විශ්වාසය රැක ගැනීමට සමත් වූ ආයතනයක්. මේ ලිපියෙන් කියන්නට යන්නේ ඒ විශ්වාසය තවත් වැඩි කිරීමට ඔවුන් ගෙන ඇති පියවරක් ගැනයි.

අද බොහෝ දෙනාට Gmail ගිණුමක් සතුයි. තම එදිනෙදා වැඩ කටයුතු මෙන්ම විවිධාකාර web ගිණුම් සඳහා Gmail ගිණුම් භාවිතා කරන නිසාම එහි ඇති රහස්‍ය භාවය අතිශයෙන් වැදගත් කරුණක්. විශේෂයෙන්ම මේ දිනවල අහන්නට දකින්නට ලැබෙන දේවල් සලකා බැලීමේදී cyber අවකාශයේදී තම පෞද්ගලිකත්වයට හානියක් වේදෝයි කුඩා හෝ චකිතයක් දැනීම පුදුමයට කරුණක් නොවේ. දේශපාලකයන්, ව්‍යාපාරිකයන් හා සමාජයට බලපෑම් කල හැකි පුද්ගලයන්ගේ web ගිණුම් ඉලක්ක කොට රහස්‍ය දත්ත සොරා ගනිමින් ව්‍යාප්ත වන “Targeted Attacks “ නම් online ප්‍රහාර වලට එරෙහිව නවතම විසඳුමක් Google විසින් හඳුන්වා දී තිබෙනවා. එය නමින් Advanced Protection Programme නැතහොත් APP වේ.

APP කරදරයක් වෙයිද?

ඉහත පෙන්වා දුන් පරිදි APP වලින් ලොකු ආරක්ෂාවක් සපයනවා. ඒත් මේ නිසා සිදුවන බාධාවීම් හා කරදර නැතුවාම නොවේ . පළමුව කිව යුතු වන්නේ ඔබ Google site එකකට ඇතුළු වීමේදී සෑම විටම ඉහත කී security key එක තිබිය යුතුයි. නැති නම් දවස් කීපයකට ඔබගේ ගිණුම හෝ site එකට ඇතුළු වීමට නොහැකි වේවි. ඒ වගේම කලින් සඳහන් කල පරිදි third -party apps වලට දත්ත ලබා දීම සීමිත නිසා එවැනි දත්ත අත්‍යවශ්‍ය apps භාවිතා කිරීමට නොහැකි වේවි. Google සේවාවන් සඳහා sign -in වීමේදී අනිවාර්යෙන් Google Chrome බ්‍රව්සරය පාවිච්චි කරන්නත් වෙනවා.

මුලදීම සඳහන් කල ආකාරයට Google විසින් මෙම APP සේවාව හඳුන්වා දීමට මූලික හේතුව වන්නේ Targeted Attacks. security key වලට යන වියදම අමතරව වෙනත් ලොකු වියදමක් මේ සඳහා වැය නොවුනත් ඔබ සාමාන්‍ය වැසියෙක් නම් ඉහත සඳහන් කල අවදානම් වලට ලක්වීමට ඇති ඉඩ කඩ සීමිත නිසා APP භාවිතා කිරීමට පෙර තවත් වරක් සිතා බලන්න.
