GBG Colombo presents,YouTube Night – Decoding Viral Videos

The July GBG meetup(YouTube Night) was on a different theme at a different setting.. It was held at the  relaxing atmosphere of The Manchester pub

Shehan, CEO of Loops Social Media Solutions started things off and discussed on the value of Youtube as a marketing channel, and also on why videos go viral.

Here are some of the Key stats and points he discussed,

  • 31% of videos are music videos
  • Average duration of a video is 4 minutes and 12 seconds
  • There are 2 Billion Youtube views per day, Compare that with the approximage number of  2.5 billion TV sets
  • 1 Billion unique Youtube videos views per day
  • 1 out of 2 internet users use YouTube

Why would a video go viral?

  • It includes things that grab your attention
  • The thumbnail is eye catching
  • Great Keywords
  • Advertising of the Video
  • Promoted through Social Media Influencers
  • It includes cats and babies 🙂

Next off IFilm Sri Lanka showed one of their creations, Killer Kothu: The Lankan Zombie Apocalypse a collaboration with JehanR. If you haven’t already seen it, check it out below. Its Hilarious.

They managed the entire video with two days (which included the writing of the script). Impresssive!

They also showed a beautifully done video on Leopard Trails. Take a look at it below.

The event then spinned off to a fun tone as attendees teamed up to create some Youtube magic. Few guys got together to create a human YouTube. Next was the harlem shake. (Cant wait till the video is uploaded)Then there was the response video to Ex-Alien.

The official stuff ended there, and proceeded onto networking with some drinks.

Youtube Nights was a fun filled event, and hope such themed events will continue in the future. It was also a refreshing change to the standard tech meetups. Kudos to the organizing team!!

Gangnam Style: 1 Billion YouTube views!!

South Korean sensation PSY, created social media history on the 21st December when his hit single Gangnam Style became the first video to knock up 1 billion views on YouTube. Its truly astounding in the time he took to reach this milestone compared to other videos. The below graph shows the rise of Gangnam Style views against ‘Baby’ by Justin Beiber. At this rate, he will surely reach 1.5 billion views in 2013. It is really unlikely that anyone will be able to achieve this feat, atleast anytime soon.

Rewind YouTube 2012

YouTube has released a new video, Rewind YouTube 2012 which is a mashup of all the popular videos of 2012. The video runs to the music of the ever so popular ‘Gangnam Style’ and the catchy ‘Call me, maybe’. The most fascinating part of the video for us is that jehanr makes an appearance wearing the Sri Lankan cricket T-shirt.  However most of the other characters would be unknown to the general Sri Lankan. The video is quite entertaining, and do check it out below.

Gangnam Style on course to be the most viewed YouTube video

Unless you have been living under a rock, you would be very much aware of the viral hit Gangnam Style by PSY. The Youtube phenomenon which was released in July 2012 have to date been viewed over 787 million times. At the rate is going it is only a matter of time till it dethrones the current most viewed video “Baby” by Justin Beiber which currently boasts 802 million views.(JB haters will love it!) Its quite amazing when you take into consideration that Gangnam style took only 4 months to achieve this number, compared to JB’s 2 years. Check out below the youtube stats related to his hit single.

Gangnam stats

Gangnam style has also become the most liked youtube video with over 5 million likes. PSY was a happy guy receiving the Guinness World record certificate stating that…

I’m honoured, this is the first certificate I’ve ever had… I didn’t get one at school

Well certificates aside, Gangnam style will rule youtube views by the end of the year and will in all likelihood be the 1st video to hit 1 billion youtube views. Take a look at it one more time below
