The zero bezel Sharp Aquos Crystal

Back in the days I used to own a Sony Ericsson K700i, since those days I hate the big bezels and thick front glasses. I always tell my friends that I love to have slim bezels and big screens but they always laughed at me. However thanks to Android finally we started to see new innovations and the new screen technologies from vendors. When the Samsung Galaxy S4 came out it had slimmer bezels than the Galaxy S3, when the LG G3 came out it had a Slimmer bezels than the G2, but here is something interesting, few days back Sharp has launched an Android phone which is almost zero bezels. Yes it’s called the Sharp Aquos Crystal and Sharp Aquos Crystal X.

Sharp Crystal Phone

The Sharp Crystal smartphone has a 5inch 720P display, it measures 131mm X 67mm X 10mm and 140g in weight, inside it is powered by Snapdragon 400 clocked at 1.2GHz, 2040mAh battery, internal storage 8GB (SD slot included and it supports upto 128GB) and 1.5GB of RAM. Out of the box it runs Android 4.4.2 Kitkat and it has Harman Kardon audio. According to the Softbank press release this amazing phone will be available for US consumers through Sprint on 29th august.

The Aquos Crystal X the flagship version currently is only available for Japanese consumers. It has a 5.5inch 1080p display, it measures 139mm X 73mm X 11mm. Under the hood it has a Snapdragon 801 SoC, 2GB RAM, 32GB internal storage and 2610mAh battery.

Motorolla Moto G – A smart phone for the masses

Ever since the time of the stylish Motorolla Razr flip phone, Motorolla haven’t had much popularity down here in Sri Lanka. Even though they have launched many Androids, they have mostly been tied up with an operator in the U.S. so they are rarely seen here. However with the acquisition by Google, Motorolla is now moving to the unlocked model.

One of the notable releases recently was the Motorolla Moto G smart phone. Even though the Nexus 5 is taking most of the Android thunder, Moto G might end up being a bigger success. Simply put, the Moto G provides premier smart phone features at an amazing price of $179! It is apparent that Google has a clear target on the entry level smart phone market which in the coming years would probably have the most smart phone sales.

Motorolla Moto G Android

Lets take look at the specifications this little dynamite offers.

Operating System – Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean)

Display – 4.5 inches 1280 x 720 329 ppi

Processor – Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor with 1.2 GHz quad-core CPU

Capacity – 8GB, 16GB

Dimensions – Height 129.9 mm Width 65.9 mm Depth 6.0-11.6 mm (curve)

Weight – 143 grams

RAM – 1GB

Battery – lithium-ion, 2070 mAh

Camera – 5MP Rear, 1.3 MP Rear

$179 dollars with taxes would come up to about 30,000+ rupees. At that price getting a quad core processor, with 4.5 inch display is a good bargain. The only 4.5 inch display android phones available for a cheaper price would be the Micromax phones or the Dialog K45. Also even though the $179 dollar model provides only 8GB storage, for $199 one could get a 16GB model which for most would be a better buy. The reviews for the Moto G have been mainly positive with the storage and camera being the main negative points. The battery it seems is sufficient to last you a day.

For the price range the Moto G seems to be holding a good value for the buck. With Moto G and future releases in the line, it is quite possible that Motorolla will make a name again in our market.

Note : The Moto G is available for order through the Kapruka Global shop for 33,000 rupees. Check it out here.

Introducing the HTC Droid DNA, which boasts a 1080p display

You may have seen full HD 1080p TVs and you may have seen big monitors with high resolution, but this isn’t about a TV or a LCD monitor this is about a 1080p smartphone which has only 5inch screen and it has a whopping 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution. Few weeks back the popular Android smartphone vendor HTC launched the phone Droid DNA, it’s only 141mm x 70mm x 9.7mm in dimension but somehow HTC managed to squeeze a 5inch screen inside that smartphone thanks to edge to edge screen technology. As I mentioned earlier this 5inch has 1920 x 1080 pixels, normally other 720p display smartphones have only 300 to 320 pixels per inch but this screen has a whopping  440 pixels per inch. Engadget has mentioned in their review “Images appear to just float above the screen. The font rendering is crisper than anything we’ve ever seen, and 1080p movies look simply stunning” Yes! This is 100% true because this 5inch screen is not any ordinary display, it’s a Super LCD 3. Even exceeding the Samsung AMOLED displays, these Super LCDs produce better saturation and sharper images.

Even exceeding the Samsung AMOLED displays, these Super LCDs produce better saturation and sharper images.

This HTC Droid DNA smartphone is a powerhouse, because it’s powered by Qualcomm’s custom made ARM quad core processor called S4 Pro APQ8064 (28nm technology) and it has 2GB of RAM. This quad core beast runs at 1.5GHz and it has an Adreno 320 GPU (can push up to 225 million triangles per second) built-in. this is the best performing processor currently out there and it scored 7698 in Quadrant benchmark, 13826 points in AnTuTu.

Droid DNA comes with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with Sense 4+ out of the box. As we know Jelly Bean OS is the most stable and the most powerful Android OS currently out there, its new features like “Project Butter”, triple buffered graphics, extended Vsync timing and animation frame rates to 60 FPS made the OS buttery smooth, and on top of that HTC added their own skin called Sense 4+ which includes more apps and features. Looking at the camera, the Droid DNA featured an f/2.0 28mm wide-angle 8 mega pixel camera which can shoot up to 4 pictures per second. Both front and rear cameras can record 1080p video at 30fps and from the rear camera you are able to shoot images while you are video recording. This device packs a 2020mAh battery, Gsmarena claims it handle 6:40 hours web browsing, 7:30 hours of video playback and it has 11 hours of 3G talk time. However personally I think the battery capacity is insufficient for this powerhouse. Check out the full specs of the HTC Droid DNA below.
