Can technology be our best friend?

We are bound!

Technology is overtaking our daily lives. Regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, career or economic status, you are engaged with a smartphone. These devices make us forget who we are and what we are capable of, wasting our valuable time to a certain extent which can be spent with a real human being, involving emotions. The phone, computer, tablet and other high tech devices have become not just objects, but for many, those are their best companions. In real life, if we feel lonely, anxious or sad, we might seek the attention and affection of another human being to console us. What if some of the lonely people didn’t deserve a grief taker? If we argue regarding the so-called concept, there are positive impacts as well as negative impacts.

During the past, humanity yearned for fewer needs. With the evolution, these requirements became more and more complicated since the technology made a revolution. The technology and social media go hand in hand, plays a significant role in everybody’s lives. We are so much influenced by the social media nowadays, and some of them are residing in the extreme, being addicts. From the morning to the day’s end, we spend plenty of hours on social media, yet feeling isolated. The narcissistic personality disorder is overcoming the society, majorly due to lack of empathy and seeking of admiration from the outsiders.

Social Media

Social media sites can make numerous casual relationships, which consumes more of our time and psychic energy, which seems to be more significant than the meaningful relationships we foster in the real world. People tend to post intimate details of their lives, providing access to their privacy. The pleasure we derive from sharing tidbits of our lives on social networks will lead to social media addiction. When someone wants to get attention from the public, they tend to post frequently on social media sites and evaluate themselves corresponding to the likes or the comments they receive. Their posts will boost the reality of their lives due to the exaggeration, and make them appear more desirable to associate. This might eventually lead to depression. Many individuals spend so much time on social media to receive news, play games, chat with friends which interfere their daily lives. They constantly check up on others opinions and posts to eliminate the fear of missing out. They often tend to compare their lifestyle with what other people exaggerate on social media.

Nowadays, the use of text messaging and social media messages have become a common occurrence and this has reduced the human interaction. The interaction with others has become effortless because people have isolated themselves behind online identities. The society use abbreviations and emojis to express their emotions eliminating direct communication. This scenario will isolate human beings more than ever, hence dismissing the need to socialize.

Guilt & Stress

Simply, modern society people are overwhelmed with guilt due to lack of human association and the stress caused by day to day activities. So we are eventually fond of interacting because we need mental stimuli. We are inclined to use all the kinds of social media, as stated before, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, etc. to fulfill it. But in contrary to all these remedies, people tend to feel lonely and isolated due to lack of empathy. Even if we socialize more on social media, we feel more isolated, and these natural urges persuade us to seek connections. Further, we seek validations on other personal matters from other people. If you make a great painting, and you love it, that’s great. If other people love it too, that’s better. Simply we, humans are attention seekers. Well, what if we state, those devices mimicking realistic personal responses are now taking the place of their real human counterparts.

“Generally, when people feel socially excluded, they seek out other ways of compensating, such as exaggerating their number of Facebook friends or engaging in pro-social behaviors to find other means of interactions with people. When you introduce a humanlike product, those compensatory behaviors stop,” says Jenny Olson, study co-author and marketing professor at the University of Kansas, in a statement.

Personal Assistants

This is where the Intelligent personal assistants play an important part. Intelligent personal assistants, also called virtual assistants, are software applications or devices that can assist the user with tasks, planning, or retrieving information, similar to a human assistant. This technology usually fully utilizes the sensors present on the device it runs on for contextual awareness. In this way it can deliver more accurate and relevant information. Modern intelligent personal assistants are able to learn based on previous input so they can offer better, more personalized results to the user. Personal assistants that are for the general consumer are, for example, the Apple Siri, Microsoft Cortana, or Amazon Echo.

“Alexa isn’t a perfect replacement for your friend Alexis. But the virtual assistant can affect your social needs.” says lead author and marketing professor at DePaul University, James Mourey, in a statement.

Harper’s magazine ran part of a conversation with Chinese journalist Chen Zhiyan and three chatbots: Chicken Little, Little Ice, and Little Knoll. The conversation took place on instant messaging and calling app, WeChat. What Zhiyan determined using these three chatbots was, that many people were confiding over their concerns, and they had felt lonely, mostly at night where only these chatbots can accompany them.

Despite the growing trend of finding solace in the virtual arms of a machine, it is important to nurture real-life relationships and develop self-awareness. If we spend more and more time snuggled up with the technology, we have to question ourselves repeatedly, ‘Are these devices bringing us closer together or further apart?’. Though the answer might depend on which decade you were born in, the result might be the same.

Twitter is going to be “not-free”

Twitter being the free service social media was founded on March 21st, 2006. As at now, it’s a free service with a user base of 319 million users around the world. Like many other social media companies, Twitter is purely being supported by advertising.

Even though Twitter is popular among users in countries like United States, India, and Japan, it has failed to generate sufficient profit with advertisements.

As per spokeswoman Brielle Villablanca “Twitter is conducting a survey to assess the interest in a new, more enhanced version of Tweetdeck”. Tweetdeck is a tool that helps users navigate the network. She also added that “we’re exploring several ways to make Tweetdeck even more valuable for professionals”.

The Sri Lankan version of the ‘Be Like Bill’ meme ‘Be Like Siripala’ is doing the rounds in social media and sprung into popularity. Its good to see that it is not direct translation of the English version, rather applying the concept in Sri Lankan context. It hits at popular Sri Lankan keyboard heroes such as political ranters.

Social Media in Sri lanka politics

Power, Politics, Society: explained by many academics & scholars in different ways. It varies from Idealist to Realist to Identity to Marxist & to Globalist! Concepts examined by different paradigms. History created remarkable associations of nations. From League of Nations to the United Nations, entities were established by nations on Global, International & regional levels.  All these were created by the States; we rather call them the Heads of States, where the citizen’s involvement is minimum. Today, general public has more decision power is politics via Social Media.  Then how big Social Media? When did it all start?

The origins of social media go far deeper than we can imagine, though it came like a new trend. The earliest method of communication across great distance was “Postal Letters”. In 1972, the telegraph was invented while the telephone & the radio were invented in 1890 and 1891 respectively. Technology started to change rapidly in 20th century. With the birth of first two computers in 1940s, scientists & engineered began to work on creating network between the computer, which invented “Internet”. From the earliest form of internet such as “Compuserve” to primitive forms of email, technology developed further. The first identifiable social media site, Six Degrees, was created in 1997. From year 2000 networks like MySpace & LinkedIn gained prominence while Photobucket and Flickr facilitated online photo sharing. YouTube which came out in 2005, created an entirely new media for people to communicate and share with each other. Facebook & Twitter made a immersive change in people’s life style after 2006, while we can add many more to the social media family namely Tumblr, Spotify, Foursquare and Pinterest etc. Today, there is a marvelous collection of social networking sites, & the most convenient thing is that many of them allow cross-posting. This allows users to reach mass. Under these circumstances, Social Media is playing a major role in National & international politics.

In Sri Lanka, for the majority the concept of social media is kind of a new trend & the involvement of social media to national politics isn’t going too far. The first heavy wave of social media political campaign emerged at the final stage of the war & even during the post-war period. In globalized world, people are no longer defined only by their ethnic or national origin. Diaspora communities have become more prominent, where these groups are actively involving in homeland politics. The most inextricable move is that they often create a global picture against the government s of their “home” states. Social media plays a massive role in this case.  This is what we refer as the long-distance nationalism & this form of political engagement can be considered a subset of the “transnational political practices” of migrant communities. This was very clear during the war time in Sri Lanka. The former Sri Lankan government was under a tremendous pressure especially on social media which brought the attention of highly empowered international entities & regimes over the alleged war crimes. Dr Chris Nonis the former Sri Lankan High Commissioner to the United Kingdom recently stunned the world stating that the Tamil diaspora is carrying a “Proxy propaganda war” against the Sri Lankan government. His reply to the international community went viral on social media creating a phenomenal riposte.
The second biggest wave of social media campaign started along with the 2010 presidential election. Establishing the brands of SF to MR & propagating their principle & mandate and mudslinging were very much interactive n SM during this period. Users created their own communities, shared their thoughts & opinions, posted their own videos & pictures, created their own funny corners for both sides & even conducted their own surveys on SM for their predictions.  Things got more progressive during the presidential election of 2015. Some may already considered this can be the first ever cyber election in Sri Lanka. Executive Presidency, Constitutional reforms, Good governance, corruptions, nepotism, judicial systems, Media freedom & human rights were the main themes highlighted & discussed in social media. This year’s presidential election was a historical as we witnessed an extraordinary use of social media by both candidates as well as by the youth. This became a growing power of youth in the country. When the polls were closed, the whole country went calm & streets went calm. However, the social media was full of rumors & predictions while the #tag of #presPollSL was been used thousand times. When MY3 was the emerging popularity & the topic in social media, MR campaigned mostly on traditional media & even tried attacking the social media advertising on traditional media. These were also been cartooned many times;
Who were the social media presidents in 2010 & 2015? Both are the common candidates, Sarath Fonseka & Maithripala Sirisena. However, MR’s traditional campaign took-over SF’s social media popularity. By 2015, things have changed drastically. Power & the usage of social media, especially by the youth with new votes were not able to take as a simple thing. Below stats are based on the survey I extracted from Daily FT during the last 2 weeks of the presidential election campaign on social media.
SM 1

#IVotedSL a trilingual campaign launched by the Centre for Monitoring Election Violence encourage citizens to cast their votes. For many youth, it was the SM, the first tune in channel to the last updates & it was just a matter of spelling their question on a browser, which gave them the 360 degree view of the subject matter. Social media also gave an opportunity to MR even after his defeat to reach his mass & convey his messages & reactions to both positive & negative comments spreading around him.
However, things in favor of MY3 changed again on social media grounds, when the president released a statement after few weeks after his victory claiming that the misleading news circulating on his social media sites. Both positive & negative, mudslinging & aspirational news pervaded the social media from both parties for & against each other. However it still keeps as media to communicate a mass with both true &false information supported by both parties in public. Can the social media be the new concept of emerging digital democracy in future? Answer is too tricky. Since it sees no end as long as the human race exist on planet, from presidential elections to 100 day plan to next government elections to whatever comes next…Social Media & the politics will always be interlinked. However the question remains on what is the mindful ways to use the social media? Can everything be accepted? Can anything be shared? Can anything be argued? I have noticed significant percentage of information available & shared on social media on Sri Lankan politics are misleading. I have noticed more users been reactive rather than active. Keep in mind to think & re-think whether it is true, it is necessary & it is the kind to post, share or comment on your social media & have fun!schbasci

Introducing Facebook Save

Facebook  is currently rolling out a useful feature called Saved Posts, which will allow users to save Facebook posts in order to view them later. This will be helpful in the instance where you see an interesting post , but do not have time at that moment to view it. It would also help keep those treasured posts, the ones that inspire and the ones with fond memories bookmarked for quick access.

Saving a post is quite simple. Just click on the arrow on the top right hand corner of the post and choose save. All saved items can then be view-able through the ‘Saved’ link that can be access from your profile home page. This feature will most likely to be frequently used, while more options to organize the saved posts will surely be on the roadmap.

Use Facebook responsibly – Campaign by DIMO

Facebook has become “the trend” in Sri Lankan social media, and there has been increasing number of complaints against irresponsible usage. SLCERT (Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team) says it has received around 1,100 internet related complaints so far this 2013 while a majority of them concern the Facebook. Mainly its our younger generation that’s being strongly attracted to Facebook as well as badly beaten. It’s a shame that a few young girls committed suicide over photographs that was published of them on Facebook!

There is something wide of the mark for such tragedies to happen. Our society has attracted to Facebook without considering its limits, its flaws. Privacy aspect is neglected all along! Coming from a very sensitive cultural background, public expressions on private matters can have a strong adverse effect on personal wellbeing.

DIMO Sri Lanka has taken a well-timed community service to educate the Facebook users to use Face book responsibly.

“Its is your duty to educate your loved ones and monitor them while on Social Media”
